My Journey

From Operations to Learning Leadership

I didn't start in instructional design. I started on the frontlines—managing teams, solving problems, and discovering that the thing I loved most was helping people grow. That discovery led me to pursue a master's degree, pivot my career, and ultimately find my calling in learning and development.

The Foundation

Learning to Lead

I spent over a decade at Sheetz, Inc., starting as a shift supervisor and working my way up through assistant manager and quality assurance specialist roles. I managed teams of 20+, oversaw $500K monthly revenue operations, and learned what it really takes to run a business.

But here's what I discovered: the thing I was best at—and loved most—was training.

When I redesigned our onboarding program, turnover dropped 80%. When I led the rollout of digital temperature monitoring across 600+ locations, the real challenge wasn't the technology—it was getting people to adopt it. I realized I was solving learning problems, not just operational ones.

That realization changed everything.

Key Insight

"The best operational improvements aren't about systems—they're about people understanding why and how to do things differently."

The Pivot

Building New Skills

In 2019, I made a deliberate choice to shift my career toward learning and development. I took a role at K&L Gates—a global law firm—where I managed a 12-member international team and got my first real experience building knowledge management systems from scratch.

I created the Global Services knowledge base that supported teams across the U.S., UK, and beyond. I introduced asynchronous eLearning that cut onboarding time in half. And when COVID hit, I led our department's transition to fully remote work without missing a single deadline.

At the same time, I went back to school. I enrolled in Bloomsburg University's M.S. in Instructional Design and Technology program—because I wanted the theory and methodology to match the instincts I'd developed through years of practical experience.

The Craft

Becoming an Instructional Designer

With my master's degree in progress, I took on instructional design roles that let me apply what I was learning in real time.

At Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, I worked with medical faculty to design interactive learning for future physicians—a humbling experience that taught me how to translate complex expertise into accessible content.

Then I returned to Sheetz, this time as an Instructional Designer. I developed enterprise learning programs for 24,000+ employees, managed a $150K vendor budget, and became an early adopter of AI tools like WellSaid to improve efficiency without sacrificing quality.

I also started presenting to executive leadership—learning to tell the story of L&D in terms that connected to business outcomes. That skill would prove essential in my next chapter.

Highlight Project

Active Shooter Training: Developed an innovative 360-degree interactive course that enhanced safety preparedness for 24,000+ employees. This project showed me how the right design can make even difficult topics engaging and impactful.

The Function

Owning the Function

At Trillion Health & Hormone, I led organizational learning, compliance, and workforce development for a healthcare organization focused on improving patient access and experience. My role spanned strategy, infrastructure, governance, and execution—ensuring learning scaled as the organization grew.

I built the learning infrastructure from the ground up—establishing governance, knowledge management systems, and scalable training programs that supported the organization through 100%+ patient growth and 30% workforce expansion.

I developed leadership training, owned the L&D budget, and presented strategy to executive leadership—while continuously exploring how Artificial Intelligence can enhance learning without compromising quality or organizational knowledge.

This role represented the culmination of my career journey—combining operational instincts, instructional design expertise, and strategic leadership to drive real organizational impact.

What This Journey Taught Me

The unique perspective I bring to learning leadership.

Training Must Change Behavior

Having managed frontline teams and P&L, I know the difference between training that looks good and training that actually changes behavior. I design learning experiences to solve real operational problems—not just to drive completion rates.

Infrastructure Makes Learning Stick

Sustainable learning doesn't happen course by course. It requires governance, knowledge management, clear ownership, and review cadences. I've built these systems from scratch multiple times and know what it takes to make them stick.

Learning Must Connect to Business Outcomes

Learning leaders need to speak the language executives care about. I connect L&D to outcomes like revenue, efficiency, compliance growth, and risk reduction—so learning is seen as a business driver, not a support function.

Technology Should Enable, Not Replace, Design

I'm an early adopter of AI and emerging tools, but always with intention. Technology should enhance good design, protect organizational knowledge, and improve efficiency—never replace thoughtful learning strategy.
